Sports Matchbox Advertising Tins Ephemera
Lot 291:
Description
An early point of sale hanging sign for Fleischmann’s Yeast. Using product images within a picture was a short lived advertising trick, encouraging consumers to put the sign on the wall of their home. It measures about 10 3/8th inches tall x 13 1/4th inches wide. It was printed by G H Buck & Co Lith. New York. Per Jay Last’s book, The Color Explosion, the sign was printed 1885 – 1892 the dates the company operated under this name.
Condition: The colors are strong. The hole at the center top is original to the sign. The sign shows its age: There’s a closed tear at the top left edge, a major Y shaped one beneath the boy looking, a tear through the printer’s name on the lower right side. The lower left corner was bent / torn off? and repaired. The lower right corner is missing paper if viewed from the back. There is a hole / puncture at the right edge about 1 inch above the bottom. Backside is toned with spots of spills on it. Still, displays well.
