Lot 12:
Description
The Congressional Roll Call baseball game started in 1909, initially Congress against the Press. It was played intermittantly until 1962, when it became an annual event – pitting Democrats against Republican members of Congress – to raise funds for charity. In 1972, Sears, Roebuck and Co. issued a complete set of trading cards for the Congressional Baseball Game. Democrats and Republicans were shown on individual cards and in a team photo. We are selling 16 Republican cards, including the team photo, 15 Democrat cards, including the team photo, 3 generic cards ( for example, A Race for the Plate ), one of Former Senator Eugene McCarthy, and one showing the coaches and the 1971 game’s MVP. This set shows the 1971 teams. We do not know if the set of cards is complete. Wilmer Mizell, a HOF pitcher, served in the House during this period as a North Carolina Republican Representative and his card is included. He was reputably banned from future games after throwing a no hitter.
